Work on ‘ready-to-fit’ underpass begins

A QUICK FIX SOLUTION: Work in progress on the 'ready-to-fit' underpass at Cauvery junction in Bangalore on Wednesday.

BANGALORE: Amidst apprehensions and scepticism about the success of pre-cast underpasses, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) started work on the actual fixing of the first of its seven "ready-to-fit" underpasses at Cauvery junction on Wednesday.

Backed by heavy-duty equipment, BBMP staff began excavating earth on Sankey Road in front of Sadashivnagar 18th Cross Road even as sceptics stopped to wonder how a government agency could build an underpass in 72 hours. "I have my own doubts about the completion of this facility in 72 hours as claimed by BBMP officials. We have seen the functioning of BBMP in the past and we know how different it is from a private agency," said Bala Chander, a freelance consultant who uses the Sankey Road.

Steve Carson's 'Outdoors' column: BASSmasters Classic is competitive ...

Sometimes referred to as the Super Bowl of bass fishing, the BASSmasters Classic began its three-day run today on Lake Hartwell in Greenville, S.C. With a $500,000 prize for the first-place finisher, the purse is not quite as big as the $1 million-plus available to the winner of the Bisbee's Black and Blue marlin tournament in Cabo San Lucas. However, far more anglers consider this event to be worthy of becoming a spectator. The contest even merits 13 hours of television programming this weekend on ESPN2.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the 110-angler field contains several current and former Northern California fishermen. One of the favorites to win the overall title is undoubtedly Skeet Reese of Auburn, who also happens to be the reigning Bass Anglers Sportsman Society "Angler of the Year."

Also on the roster are Greg Gutierrez of Red Bluff; Oroville native Gary Klein (currently of Weatherford, Texas); Chico State graduate Mark Tyler (currently of Scottsdale, Ariz.); Fred Roumbanis of Auburn; Ish Monroe of Hughson; and Jared Lintner of Arroyo Grande.

UB Founds Honors College for Exceptional Students

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo announced today the founding of The University Honors College, marking a major milestone in UB's long tradition of providing honors programming for exceptional undergraduate students.

UB Provost Satish K. Tripathi hosted a founding ceremony for The University Honors College with UB President John B. Simpson on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.

Establishment of The University Honors College is a significant step forward in the evolution of UB's honors program, which was launched in 1981 as the first formal honors program in the State University of New York system. UB traces the beginnings of its honors program back to 1923 when it offered one of the first honors tutorials in the U.S.

"Today's founding of a full-fledged honors college with a four-year curriculum will enable our honors students to take fuller advantage of UB's tremendous intellectual resources," Tripathi said.
