| New concepts about landscape design
Smaller turf areas, low-volume irrigation systems, mulching and low-input plant care are important components of these energy-efficient landscapes. An example could be replacing a traditional high-maintenance lawn area with ground covers and easily maintained decks, terraces and patios of wood, brick, paving or stone.Gardeners are composting and recycling more, using less fertilizer and choosing environmentally friendly products for dealing with pests. Pest control now tends to utilize the concepts of Integrated Pest Management, where many strategies are employed (especially using plants that are less prone to problems) to manage pests; and pesticides whether organic or chemical are applied only when absolutely necessary. Its also appropriate to accept some level of pest damage to landscape plants. Many of us have decided it is OK to share our gardens with other creatures, and even create habitats to provide for their needs.
Towns rethink board meeting security
Charlie Coleman routinely attend that city's board sessions. In Bartlett, all of the police hierarchy -- Chief Gary Rikard, Assistant Chief Glen Williamson and the department's three inspectors -- attend the meeting in uniform, providing a significant police presence at that city's bimonthly meetings. Part of the latest security evaluation includes whether the brass should position themselves in different areas of the chamber. Germantown Police Chief Richard Hall used to sit on one of the first two rows during meetings but has now moved to the dais so he can look out over the crowd. The city added two officers at Monday night's meeting due to the Kirkwood incident. "People's emotions take over and you never know what can happen," Lawton said. There have been times when elected officials, even in the quiet suburbs, faced matters that stirred a crowd to the point that leaders wanted more protection or crowd control.
Melting Snow, Stormwater Gets Into Aurora Water
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ― Untreated stormwater got into a 60-inch pipeline that delivers clean water to Aurora Water customers after a relief valve released pressure. Meghan Hughes said the estimated 325 gallons of untreated water likely was diluted by the hundreds of thousands of gallons in the pipe, but several customers called complaining about the water's taste and odor. About 3,200 customers were affected in a 2-square-mile area late Tuesday and early Wednesday. About nine customers who called the public utility had the pipes flushed in their homes, and hydrants were opened to flush the pipeline. Higher than normal snowmelt raised the water level in the drain pipe, that also houses the water supply pipeline. (© MMVII CBS Television Stations, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
