| Wales see familiarity breeding success as Gatland opts for 13 Ospreys
The previous record was set in 1948 when Wales went to Twickenham armed with 10 Cardiff players, all of whom survived for two more games, but in those days the selectors had a working base of 16 clubs rather than the present format of four regions and an English outpost. .
Melting ice gives D.M. water lousy flavor
Stubborn river ice has made conditions perfect for an annual rite of late winter in Des Moines: lousy tasting water. Des Moines Water Works officials have been forced to pump more chlorine into tap water to counter high ammonia levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers, two major sources of drinking water. Randy Beavers, interim general manager of the utility, said the problem is the leaves and other plant material that decompose in the rivers when they are covered with ice. .
PA Gov. Rendell, 13 Other Governors Decry EPA's Waiver Denial in Joint ...
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania today joined California and 12 other states in criticizing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen L. Johnson for his actions last month in denying a measure that would protect the public and environmental health above a federal government program. Governor Edward G. Rendell, as well as the chief executives of other states who have either adopted, or planned to adopt, a California regulation that would impose stricter greenhouse gas emission standards on automobiles, sent a letter to Johnson criticizing his agency's denial of the waiver needed by California to implement the program. Pennsylvania has adopted the stricter California emission rules, but cannot realize greenhouse gas reductions from the rules unless California is permitted to enforce that portion of its clean vehicle program.
Many County Streams Listed As 'Impaired'
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has released a new statewide list of streams, lakes and reservoirs that do not meet requirements for fishing, recreation and other public uses. As in past years, Greene County has a large number of streams -- a total of 59 -- listed as "impaired" on the list. The great majority of these streams are "listed" because of siltation, and pasture grazing is listed as the cause. Some of the Greene County streams are listed as having unacceptably high levels of the E. coli bacteria, and again the cause is said to be pasture grazing. Full Listing Available This draft list -- also called the 2008 303(d) List -- is a requirement of the federal Clean Water Act. It can be viewed online at http://www.state.tn.us/environment/wpc/publications/2008draft303dlist.pdf.
Henry K. Lee
Jurors have long been sent home. Under questioning by defense attorney William Du Bois, Fraga said he was surprised that Alameda County didn't have a more structured process to interview children that would avoid common pitfalls and the risk of traumatizing them. Fraga continued to testify at a rapid clip at times, or in a monotone that made his answers disappear into the mike. Court reporter Annie Mendiola again told him to slow down. "I'm still talking fast?" asked Fraga, sounding surprised. Moments later, as he read from something, he read super-fast. "Please, please, please, slow down," Du Bois told him. "It's in the record," Fraga said, referring to the text. But the judge told him Mendiola didn't have access to what he was reading from and that if she didn't take down what he was saying, no one would.
